The Patrons of Animal Welfare (PAW) clinic was founded in 1999 by Lorraine Sellers, an experienced, small animal veterinarian, and retired physician David Rose. Located south of Mulegé, in Baja, the clinic provides a low-cost spay and neuter program for dogs and cats as well as vaccinations and limited basic services to treat existing health problems. The clinic is run entirely by volunteer veterinarians, veterinary technicians and trained support staff, and supported solely by donations.
The PAW clinic usually operates from November through April. Approximately 500 dogs and cats, 80% of which belong to local Mexican families, are treated each season. Of these, between 200 and 300 are sterilized. In addition, 600 to 800 doses of vaccinations are administered. A large majority of the animals seen are also treated for parasitic infestations, including intestinal worms, heartworm (a locally common, mosquito-borne parasite), fleas, ticks, and mange.
